Cultural destination.
It was declared -in 1985- a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, being an extraordinary set of monuments grouped around the tomb of Santiago El Mayor, and destination of all routes of the pilgrimage of Christianity, is undoubtedly one of the most indisputable heritage assets of Humanity.
As well as European Capital of Culture, a distinction held in 2000, along with other European cities, recognition granted for its cultural dynamism and its cultural outreach throughout history, due to the Camino de Santiago.
“A Boa Vila”
Built with patience over the centuries, this “boa vila” with its delightful streets and squares lined with buildings of classical and popular architecture guild names, has one of the most beautiful and best preserved historic areas of Galicia.
In recent times it became a pedestrian city where worth taking long walks, rest in its parks and squares and enjoy a snack, a coffee or a drink in one of its lively terraces.
The island of laurels
Cortegada is definitely a real natural treasure. Besides being part of the National Park of the Atlantic Islands, it hides meadows and farmlands cultivated by the inhabitants of an ancient town, which still vestiges.
But it is certainly the laurel forest, which surrounds its mystique throughout the island, which is the largest in Europe.
Old River Valley
The Ria de Arousa has a fascinating history, since in its origin, the Umia river emptied into the entrance of the estuary, where the set of islands and rocky cliffs, are the tops of the mountains that marked the valley. Archaeological buildings witnessed the passage of different cultures throughout time. Phoenicians, Saracens, Vikings and Normans came to this land for mineral or attracted by the famous legends surrounding Compostela and its treasures.
Today, lovers of nature and marine culture will find this place as a destination, since numerous fishing villages sit along the coast between white sand in them can you taste seafood of first quality.
